I grew up in West Yorkshire, attending King James' School and Greenhead College, before studying Mathematics and Astronomy (B.Sc) at University College London (1986 - 1989) followed by a PhD in the UCL astrophysics group group, under the supervision of Prof Allan Willis and Dr Linda Smith (1989 - 1993).

I spent 5 years as a Research Council (PPARC) funded postdoc at UCL, before receiving a Royal Society University Research Fellowship which I held at UCL (1998 - 2003) and Sheffield (2003 -2006). I was initially appointed to Lectureship in Sheffield (7/2003 - 9/2005), followed by a Readership (10/2005 - 12/2006) and Personal Chair (2007-). I have served on the following national/international committees:
  • IAU Commission 29: Stellar Spectra. Organizing Ctte Member (2012-2015)
  • E-ELT UK Design Study Steering Ctte (2009-2016)
  • Royal Society University Research Fellowship Ai appointment committee (2014+, Deputy Chair 2016+)

I served as the Director of Teaching of the Department of Physics and Astronomy from 2012/13 - 2015/16, interim Head of Department from Jun 2016 - Jan 2017, and am currently a member of the University Senate (2011/12 - 2016/17).
